The aim of this course is to give students a broad scope introduction to the field of education and the teaching profession. It examines the motivation, qualities, training, and development to begin a successful teaching career. The course looks at the diverse backgrounds of students and how this can be a factor in their learning. The students are introduced to the concept of a standards-based curriculum and examine the California Standards for the Teaching Profession. Students will analyze and respond to critical documents issued by the state of California regarding the common core standards and assessment.

Throughout the course, there is an emphasis on the importance of self-knowledge and self-reflection and this is put into practice in every unit.  The students will get a look at the challenge of classroom management, individualizing learning and aligning lessons and assessments with state standards. The final part of the course deals with career and professional development. By the end of the course, students will have both an objective and personal view of what it takes to become a teacher who can maximize their own potential and that of the students and communities they serve.

Introduction to teaching is a wonderful opportunity for students to experience the foundational understanding in the career of teaching through meaningful learning assignments.
